summer beach clean up 2021

Yet again our team took to the Hart Beach to clean the strip of sand next to the Scheveningen Strand from waste that ends up at the beach from leisure activities that take place there. It is mostly the disposable plastics that are scattered on the sand and pose danger by making their way into the water, where they threaten the lives of fish and other sea animals and pose as a future threat to our own health and safety in a form of microplastics.

The event was meant to raise awareness of the local community and HTh Students, especially as so many of us spend time togetehr at the beach.

Movie screening

"A Life on our planet"

In the Sustainability Committee, we do not only take action but also find time to organise events for our members and the community.  One of such events was the screening of the newly released David Attenborough movie in the Aula of the Hague Campus.

Rescued plants giveaway

As COVID-19 forces us to stay inside more than usual, we have decided to gift the students living in Skotel a plant which has been rescued and revived back to life, rather than being discarded. It is an initiative called "rescued plants" which we wanted to bring attention to - as plant waste is just as big of a part of unsustainable use of resources as any other.

A batch of rescued plants was purchased by the committee and given out to the house manager of houses in the Skotel Hague Campus.

HTH Beekeeping club

We are extremely proud to present the newest achievement of the HTHSustainabilityCommittee. A beekeeping club! Under the guidance of Mr Joost de Vos, students will receive 8 classes that teach them all about beekeeping!

Teaching students about bees should be a compulsory subject at every school. Since bees are essential for human life on this planet, but the sad and scary truth is that numbers are declining. To help protect and save these wonderful creatures and to preserve our own way of life too, it is of the utmost importance that we all educate ourselves and others on what it is exactly that makes bees so amazing and so integral for life.

Virtual Rose

X Student Council

For Valentine's Day, we collaborated with the Student Council to arrange virtual roses for students - to share their love and appreciation for each other instead of the traditional flowers, which are much less sustainable than you would think. We produced 3 card designs and students could choose one and write their own personalised message and tell us to whom they would like to send it. On the 14th of February, we sent the virtual roses to everyone - with a turnout of 70 lucky students in total!.

Amsterdam Circular

X Municipality of Amsterdam

In January, an online lecture and Q&A  was given by the  Circular Team of the Municipality of Amsterdam: Froukje Anna Karsten, Laura Colenbrander, as well as an HTH student  -Ilse Oldenburg. The HTH Sustainability Committee helped connect the students in our community to the lecture and give them an opportunity to gain insights and perspectives on the circular economy, the doughnut model, and the hotels for the future

Free Books

x Student council

In collaboration with the Student Council, we have arranged "free books" boxes in the Media Centre at The Hague Campus. These books have been written off, and can now get a second life in hands of their new owners - maybe even you.

This initiative is to raise awareness on the importance of the circular economy and help us get some free knowledge out of it!

Recycling Signs Skotel

In our attempts to increase the levels of recycling amongst Skotel students, The HTH Sustainability Committee has prepared these wonderful signs for all the Skotel campus houses in The Hague.

The signs correspond to the Hague's municipality recycling guidelines and are colour-coded to match the recycling bins we have provided to the Skotel Campus the Hague earlier in August 2020.

Winter beach cleanup

Keeping the beaches clean is an essential part of preventing plastic and other types of waste from ending up in the ocean. According to IUCN, about 8 million tonnes of plastic waste end up in the ocean annually, and lots of it either enters from the beach or ends up on the shore.

Regular beach clean-ups in the area is one of the ways in which we try to contribute to the UNSDG goal of preserving life underwater. It is not only about physically reducing the plastic waste but mainly raising awareness amongst the HTH Community and the local residents - to encourage them against littering on the beach.

Recycling containers

One of the first physical contributions of the Sustainability Committee to the HTH Community were these recycling containers for the houses of Skotel Campus the Hague.

Skotel thrift shop

When students leave Skotel premises they tend to move out straight to their practical placement destinations, which comes with a lot of waste - lots of remaining and unused food, cutlery, dishes, sheets and others end up in the trashbin. That is exactly why in June 2020 we organised a thrift shop instead, letting students drop of their unwanted items, for other students of the campus the Hague and get.
